Japan’s Sato clinches Youth Olympic Games first gold medal

Japan’s Yuka Sato became the first athlete to clinch the first gold medal of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

Sato, 18, was one of the favourites to strike gold in the Girls Triathlon competition as she is the only competitor in the event to clock a top-10 finish at last year’s World Junior Championships.

She certainly lived up to expectations by clocking an impressive 1hr 49.69sec to win the Girls Triathlon final held at East Coast Park this morning.

Ellie Salthouse of Australia finished a mere 14.7 seconds behind Sato to take the silver medal while United States’ Kelly Whitley took home the bronze.

Singapore’s Clara Wong came in 30th out of the 32 triathletes with a time of 1hr 21min 30.85 seconds.

The triathlon final consists of a 750m swim, 20km on bike and a 5km run.
