‘French spiderman’ scales Singapore Flyer

The crowds were gathered below cheering him on, and even as the drizzle slowly got heavier, the world renowned “French spiderman” made his way up – and down – the Singapore Flyer.

On Friday (5 November 2010), urban climber Alain Robert, 48, became the first man to scale the world’s highest ferris wheel which stands 165 metres tall, about the height of a 42-storey building. It was his first time climbing a circular structure in motion.

Robert was in Singapore for Asia’s largest action sports carnival, Mettle Games, which was held over two weekends (29 – 31 October and 5 – 7 November). Some 500 participants and demonstrators from 15 countries have taken part in the event.

At 6pm, Robert started his climb outside a capsule, making his way round the Flyer’s 471-metre circumference. In 20 minutes, he reached the peak, and climbed back down at around 6.35pm.
