Canning in Singapore

Did you know in 1994, an American called Michael Fay was sentenced to four months imprisonment, six strokes of the cane and a S$3500 fine in Singapore for theft and vandalism.
But before he was canned, his number of strokes of the cane was reduced from six to four as a gesture of respect toward US President Bill Clinton.
Sixteen years later in June 2010, a Swiss national, Oliver Friker was sentenced to seven months imprisonment and received three strokes of the cane for vandalising the Singapore MRT train carraige, breaking public property by cutting a hole in the fence for access and for trespassing into the depot illegally. But was released on 15 November 2010 which has been impressioned for less than five months for good behaviour. Click here to watch the vandalised MRT train.
